A Letter Straight from the Heart
Dear friends and followers,
When Emily and I first sat down to create this platform, it was a no-brainer that we wanted to write about Western Pennsylvania sports. Despite the fact that we are both from the area, the sports history is so rich. Former WPIAL players have earned spots in national museums and hall of fame displays. Multiple athletes from the region are world champions with massive followings. The topic is recognized far beyond our state.
In almost every interview we’ve done with a local football player or coach, the same question has been asked.
“What is it about Western PA football that sets itself apart from other areas?”
Well, I’m not entirely sure that there is one specific explanation. What I’ve witnessed over the years was a combination of work ethic, discipline, tenacity and hard-nosed play. While there is no single generalization to define a WPIAL football player, I do believe they all have one thing in common: the heart of a lion.
This past Saturday brought another round of WPIAL championships. This day is usually characterized by gritty performances as players fight through what could be their final game of the season. This year, it was marked by a display of the utmost heart, dedication and honor.
I have never met Aliquippa’s quarterback Vaughn Morris. But I do know that he exemplifies all of the positive things we admire about Western PA football. For those that are not aware of the situation, Vaughn’s mother passed away the night before the WPIAL Championship game.
Despite experiencing grief and the aftermath of loss, he took the field with his teammates the very next day.
This letter isn’t about the final score of the game, but rather to bring awareness to fundraising efforts for Vaughn and his family.
The Quip Nation Facebook page has provided details for making donations. They can be made via Cash App, PayPal or Venmo. The original post from Quip Nation has been included below.
If you are able to donate, it would greatly help defray costs for the family at this difficult time. Sharing Quip Nation’s post would also be extremely helpful and surely appreciated.
The Aliquippa community, Beaver County residents, Western Pennsylvania natives and many others are coming together to help the family at this difficult time.
There’s a lot of heart in Western Pennsylvania. Heart connects us in ways that are bigger than the game. We hope our followers will join the efforts to support this family. It is the Western Pennsylvania way to unite when someone in our community needs our help.
