Basketball Player Turned Entrepreneur: Meet the Owner of Tedesco Body Shop
By: Emily Bondi
At six years old Natalie Tedesco was learning how to play basketball in her grandmas’ driveway.
“My grandma taught me how to play when I was 6. She brought out a small ball and laundry basket in her driveway and we would play for hours.”
Present day, Tedesco is the owner of Tedesco Body Shop in Murrysville, PA her hometown. She joined the Army Reserve on December 13, 2013 and graduated from Franklin Regional High School in 2014. Upon graduation she left for basic training in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. After basic training, her advanced training in Psychological Operations was at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Tedesco returned home November 2014 and a year later opened Tedesco Body Shop.
She credits opening her own business from following in her parent’s footsteps. “When I was 16, my mom took me to my first boot camp class, and I fell in love with it. From that moment on, fitness changed my life. Once I decided to open a business, I knew that was my route. I wanted to help people I love, love themselves. I knew that opening a gym would have a positive impact on not only people who love fitness, but the health of our community.”
Tedesco is currently enrolled in college online with the American Military University for a BA in Exercise Science and a minor in Marketing with a projection graduation date of March 2021.
She also has extensive training throughout the years. “I began my fitness certification journey in 2015 with Crossfit Level 1. Since then, I have gained over 5 years of coaching experience. I have earned certifications in not only fitness and personal training, but nutrition coaching, mindset coaching, hormones, and RockTape recovery. I am a Master Fitness Trainer for the United States Army and a Combat Lifesaver for my military unit.”
Tedesco has used her experience on the basketball court from a young age to help her elevate to her current career path. Basketball has taught her valuable skills that she still uses today like hustle, drive, teamwork, communication and leadership.
“Playing a team sport allowed me not only work on being the best I could be, but helping my teammates do the same. I have always put 100% heart and effort into what I do and that started on the basketball court.”
Opening your own business is hard work. The long hours and time make it worthwhile. Being an athlete and an entrepreneur has taught Tedesco many life lessons that include, building a good team, leadership will make or break you, hard work pays off, there is no such thing as failure, you either win or learn, stay curious and take risks and lastly stay true to who you are.
Tedesco has grown her business and seen the impact it has on the local community. Helping people regain their health and sometimes their life back is one of the best rewards.
Tedesco Body Shop’s mission is to change lives through health and fitness by creating a fun, encouraging, and educating environment. They strive to provide an experience that will allow you to be the best you through inspiration, dedication, teamwork, and love.
Tedesco is continuing to learn and grow each day and has big goals planned. “We are getting ready to launch a larger scale online fitness and nutrition program for people who are outside commuting distance or not quite ready to go to a gym yet. We want to be able to reach and help more people.”
Tedesco has a full plate and none of this would be possible without her support system. “With all I have on my plate at Tedesco Body Shop, school, and the military, it is important to surround myself with people who keep a positive mindset. My family and my girlfriend are my biggest support outside of the gym. They are always there to motivate me when I am stressed, remind me to take time for myself, and offer advice.”
Tedesco is one of the hardest working individuals and knows that to achieve goals you must put in the time. She also added that if you are an athlete and you want to become an entrepreneur don’t let anyone dim you light. “Follow your dreams and work your butt off until you get there. Most importantly, don’t forget to take care of YOU first and enjoy the ride!”
